Havurah Shalom is currently planning for next year’s Shabbat School, which begins in the fall. April 18 is the deadline to become a Havurah Shalom member in order to enroll in Shabbat School by the May 1 enrollment deadline.
Havurah Shalom Shabbat School is for families with children in grades K-6. It meets approximately 17 Saturday afternoons throughout the school year from 3 to 5:15 pm. With the direction and support of Havurah's education staff, parents work together in teams to plan and implement the curriculum and community building activities for their child’s grade. Each teaching team is responsible for planning and implementing four sessions.
In addition to giving children a basis for Jewish learning, Shabbat School fosters a strong sense of community among families. Parents feel that the Shabbat School experience enhances their own connection to Jewish life and learning. All levels of experience are welcome at Shabbat School – nobody knows too little (or too much) to be part of a teaching team!
For more information, please see the Shabbat School page on Havurah Shalom's website. Anybody who is seriously considering Shabbat School and Havurah Shalom should contact Deborah Eisenbach-Budner, Havurah’s Education Director, as soon as possible, as Havurah staff will meet or have a conversation with all prospective families before March 31.
We are happy to discuss our education program, your family’s interests and needs, how Shabbat School compares with other synagogue education programs in Portland, and any other pieces that accompany this step. Havurah Shalom is committed to making membership financially accessible to any family that feels this should be their Jewish home, so please don’t let money be a barrier. And families are welcome to participate in holidays, Shabbat celebrations, and many other family activities without being members as they figure out where their Jewish home is.
