SUMMARY:Woven Light: Washi Sculptures by Yuri Kinoshita
DESCRIPTION:This summer\, Portland Japanese Garden is host to a glowing world of light. Woven Light showcases the illuminated washi sculptures of Yuri Kinoshita\, a Seattle-based artist who artfully crafts floating landscapes of light through her sculptural lamps that bridge the art and design world. Guests who visit the Calvin and Mayho Tanabe Gallery will see that through carefully hand-woven and sculpted washi (Japanese handmade paper made from plant fibers)\, soft light and shadow inspire a magical sense of place\, evoking the unique environment of the Pacific Northwest. More than artwork\, Kinoshita’s works are experiences that transport the viewer into a warm world of light through both works that evoke natural forms and abstracted shapes that inspire contemplation.\n\nKinoshita’s beautiful artworks are full of exciting textures and shapes that warm the mind and soul while also offering an opportunity to learn more about how washi is used for art\, design\, and decoration in Japan.\n\n\nEditor’s note: This event is a community submission.

DESCRIPTION:Bring your own picnic\, set out a blanket\, and enjoy this wonderful line-up of local musicians! On summer evenings beneath the shade of 100-year-old fir trees\, local musicians fill the park with gentle sound while little kids dance in the grass and neighbors gather on blankets and lawn chairs. All are welcome. \nCRUZAR LA CARA DE LA LUNA\nA Mariachi Opera \nMusic by José “Pepe” Martínez\nLyrics by José “Pepe” Martínez and Leonard Foglia\nBook by Leonard Foglia\nCommissioned by Houston Grand Opera\nPremiered at Houston Grand Opera in September\, 2010\nOrchestrated by David Hanlon\nOrchestrations commissioned by Minnesota Opera \n\nOPERA IN THE PARK Portland is proud to present the Oregon premiere of Cruzar la Cara de la Luna (To Cross the Face of The Moon)\, the world’s first mariachi opera. Since its premiere in 2010\, this now-beloved work—a potent and inspiring portrait of a specific community and its specific experiences–has become a modern testament to opera’s eclectic and far-reaching range. The opera will be performed free to the public (another first for the work)\, in concert format\, with full orchestra\, chorus\, and seven featured soloists. \nCruzar la Cara de la Luna tells a poignant and timely story of migration\, cultural identity\, and generational divides within the Mexican-American community. The story begins in present-day Texas where an elderly Laurentino Valesquez lies in his bed\, on the brink of death. In conversation with his adult son\, we learn that Laurentino left a wife and child in Mexico when he immigrated to the USA in search of opportunity. The borders of time and space blur as we meet three generations of the Valesquez family\, and come to understand their journeys\, physical and spiritual. With a bilingual libretto in Spanish and English\, and an incandescent score that artfully fuses traditional opera with mariachi\, the seventy-minute work invites audiences to examine their own ideas about home\, belonging\, and family\, and to find the universal in the specific.
