Portland Youth Philharmonic opens Season 102 with a program that pairs personal roots with bold new voices. Percy Grainger’s Lincolnshire Posy is a piece deeply connected to Music Director David Hattner, who first encountered it as a high school clarinetist. Its vivid storytelling and daring writing for winds left an indelible mark, making this a meaningful way to launch the season and spotlight the wind section.
Grainger’s Duke of Marlborough Fanfare adds a ceremonial flair, while Gabriela Ortiz’s La Calaca adds vibrant, rhythmically alive energy rooted in Día de los Muertos traditions.
The program also features Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5, “Emperor”, performed by PYP’s own Lucy Joo, winner of the 2025 Portland Piano International Concerto Competition. This towering masterpiece takes on new depth when played by one of our own.
