Brook Rice, the artist behind the free Pumpkin Display at West Linn, is basically the Santa of Halloween. It would be more than enough to provide one of the coolest Halloween experiences in the Portland metro area at no cost, but Rice has also put together Halloween home display routes for families who make the trek out to his display in West Linn and want to make a night of it. Best part? These homes are free to visit.
To create the routes, Rice consulted the Northwest Haunters Association map and the Pacific Northwest Christmas Lights map. After choosing homes within a geographic area from both maps, Rice visited all the homes on the route in late September and early October and chose favorites based on impact, originality, handmade decorations, and the enthusiasm of the owner. Then Rice ran the routes five to six times before finalizing them. We re-ran the full loop again this year, and the home displays are as fabulously spooky as ever.
Thanks to all of Rice’s research, looking for Halloween home displays has never been easier.
We share the routes here, with permission, to spread the word about these fantastic displays.

Northeast Portland Haunt Route
New this year! Rice took to his scooter and mapped out an exciting new route through Northeast Portland, designed for families who prefer to stay on the east side of the river. This 6.1-mile journey, which can be enjoyed in an hour or two with stops, showcases the neighborhood’s Halloween spirit. “Generally homes in Northeast have smaller front yards than other areas of Portland,” says Rice, which forces them to “be creative with the space they have.” Rice tells us you can expect “whimsical scenes and out-of-the-ordinary themes” on this route, and often multi-home groups featuring spooky displays.
