Mornings with little ones can start well … very early, long before traditional kid-friendly activities like museums and libraries open their doors. Thankfully, Portland offers some creative options to keep your kiddos entertained while you sip your coffee or get a head start on the day. Whether you’re looking to burn off some energy, spark their curiosity or just find a cozy spot to hang, here are 13 great spots to check out. And bonus for those gloomy mornings: They’re all indoors!

Ken’s Artisan Bakery (Pearl District)

Few things delight kids more than watching bakers in action. While kids marvel at the kneading, rolling and baking, parents can indulge in some of Portland’s finest croissants and coffee at Ken’s Artisan Bakery. A win-win start to the day.

Sunlan Lighting (Mississippi)

Take your kids to explore Sunlan Lighting, a quirky lighting shop that feels like a magical wonderland of glowing orbs and shimmering fixtures. This unique spot—housed in a converted bank—offers a variety of food carts. Parents can enjoy free Wifi and a freshly brewed coffee from the on-site café, Caffeine Withdrawal, while children delight in the open space and diverse culinary choices — and there’s Nutella stuffed pancakes at Rocket Breakfast! Uwajimaya (Beaverton)

More than just a grocery store — it’s a mini-adventure for kids! The highlight at Uwajimaya is the lively fish tank that captivates young ones while parents grab specialty groceries or a fresh-made Spam musubi from the deli. It’s perfect for letting little ones burn off some early morning energy while parents relax in the café area with coffee or snacks.

IKEA Marketplace, Café &  Småland Play Area (NE Portland)

IKEA’s showroom and marketplace open early on weekends, offering plenty of space to wander. Pro tip: Grab a budget-friendly breakfast (and a slice of the strawberry cake) at the café for the whole family and watch the planes take off from PDX while you eat. 

Beyond 11a.m. your kids can enjoy Småland, their supervised and free play area filled with colorful ball pits and activities. While they have a blast, you can actually do some shopping and stroll through Ikea’s maze of inspiration for up to an hour.

Home Depot and Lowe’s (Various Locations)

These big-box hardware stores provide endless fascination for young minds, from huge aisles of tools, lumber, to seasonal displays (think holiday inflatables or garden centers). Plus, check their schedules for monthly kids’ workshops where little builders can get hands-on experience! Pro tip: Make a pilgrimage to let your kids pick a paint swatch and let their imaginations run wild.

Petco (Various Locations)

Pet stores offer a surprisingly fun outing for kids who love animals. They can watch fish swimming in colorful tanks, marvel at reptiles or say hello to the adorable small animals like hamsters, guinea pigs, and ferrets. Washington Square Mall (Tigard)

No madness here! Washington Square opens their doors three hours before stores open to welcome mall walkers and offer a safe, stroller-friendly, climate-controlled space for kids to roam. Pro tip: Starbucks is open early for patrons. There’s also an indoor play area however, because cleaning staff cleans the area every morning before the mall opens (which we love!) it may or may not be open upon early arrival.
Hours: Opens at 7 am Monday through Saturday and at 8 am on Sundays
