Japanese Immersion at Richmond Elementary School

With a history spanning over 30 years, Richmond Elementary School, located in SE Portland, is renowned for its Japanese immersion program. Here, students embark on a journey to become fluent in Japanese and English from their first day of kindergarten. Richmond is a publicly funded school with a lottery-based admission system and no tuition fees, accessible to families across the region. It offers school bus service from multiple locations in Portland, including N, NE, SW, and SE areas. Richmond graduates can seamlessly continue their Japanese dual language immersion journey at Mt. Tabor Middle School and Grant High School.

Richmond fosters both academic excellence and a positive, supportive learning environment. Students explore and appreciate diverse cultural perspectives. The school’s dedicated teaching teams work collaboratively to implement an integrated bilingual instructional model, where Japanese culture and language are seamlessly woven into the core curriculum. Richmond’s commitment to cultural enrichment is reflected in the diverse range of after-school activities offered by community groups, including Taiko, Aikido, abacus, gardening, and theatre classes. Summer camps and a transformative 5th-grade trip to Japan are also offered.

Richmond takes pride in cultivating vibrant communities and prioritizing inclusivity. Recently, parents created a Black Student Union to support students. Every member of the Richmond community is encouraged to nurture a sense of belonging among each other. Richmond families are known for their fundraising efforts and also are provided various other opportunities for participation. Caregivers can get involved in a wide range of activities, including the Harvest Festival, Spring Festival, Cultural Nights, and classroom engagement, all of which enhance the community experience.
