Lights, Chitra, Action

The moment the music begins, Chitra: The Girl Prince grabs your attention and doesn’t let go until the curtain closes. Of all the performances I’ve seen at Northwest Children’s Theater in the last decade, this is far and away their most spectacular production. Combining music, dance, and drama, Chitra delivers a rollercoaster ride of emotion, from jubilant dancing and vibrant fight scenes to quiet moments of reflection.

The ancient Indian legend of Chitrangada, a warrior and princess struggling between her trailblazing talents and traditional tendencies, is also sure to open avenues of communication about what it means to be your true self.

The cast worked together beautifully to create an experience more dazzling than the individual performers combined. Alisha Menon was beautiful in the lead role, portraying a confident warrior and awkward princess with equal finesse. Presented in two segments, with a short intermission in between, the performance is non-stop action – the scenes, fights, and dancing captivated everyone.

Chitra will make anyone who sees it fall in love with live theater. Even those who may not be into princesses will get behind the swordplay. This is a dazzling performance — from casting to costumes, choreography to comedy. The music drives the exciting pace of the story and takes the lead in the dance numbers.

Leave plenty of time to get there. You’ll want to arrive early to find parking and explore the theater. The lobby has lots to check out – posters of current and past shows, information on the cast and history of the play.

Northwest Children’s Theater provides special performances with sign language or for those with sensory issues. Check with the theater for details and dates.
