Portland has several opportunities to celebrate the Mexican holiday Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. These events are opportunities to remember friends and family who have died and to support them on their spiritual journey. They are also opportunities for non-Mexican communities members to share in culture and learn the truth behind the holiday and celebration. Here are some upcoming events — if you know of more please email [email protected].
- Celebrate Halloween & Día De Muertos at Portland Mercado
Visit the community Altar exhibition on display inside the market hall, and enjoy the music, offerings, crafts, movies, popcorn and more! On October 31 they’ll also have trick or treating. October 31-Nov1.
- See an Altar Tour Bike Ride for Día de los Muertos
Decorate bikes as altars, and parade in costume around the Green Loop, visiting local businesses participating in the altar display program. Give Teatro Milagro a call to see if they’re still accepting RSVPs, but feel free to hang out on the loop to see the bikes and visit the altars either way! October 30, 1-4p.
- Celebrate Luminaria Día de Muertos at Esther Short Park
This ancestral celebration remembers and honors those who departed. Learn more about this traditional Mexican holiday from members of Vancouver’s Latinx community. October 30, 5-8p.
