Ride bikes with Kidical Mass PDX and have a sunset picnic while watching the swifts roost at Abernethy!
Every September thousands of Vaux’s Swifts roost for the night in the chimneys around Portland. This year a large group of birds has been roosting at Abernethy Elementary’s chimney.
We’ll ride bikes from the Laurelhurst Park Playground at SE Oak and SE 37the Ave, to Abernethy Elementary, on neighborhood greenways, then watch the birds till sunset, while having a picnic dinner. Bring your own picnic!
The ride is a 2 miles one-way and a 4 mile loop total, with the return after sunset which is at 6:55pm. We will listen to bird-themed music to get in the spirit before watching the swifts at sunset. Bring a picnic supper with you, there is no store stop. We need to leave Laurelhurst at 5:45 pm sharp to get to Abernethy before sunset.
We ride slow for little pedalers. Kids should wear a helmet, be able to ride in a straight line, start and stop. Cargo bikes, tandems, trailers and tag-a-longs are great for kids who haven’t learned to pedal or get tired soon.
This ride will end well after sunset around 7:45 pm, so front headlights are required for all bikes making the ride back.
We’ll ride together as a group, because kids are traffic too!
