If there’s one thing the show Portlandia teaches us, it’s that we Portlanders love our bikes. Portland has earned its reputation as a bike-friendly city. Nearly six percent of the population commutes to work—about 12 times higher than the national average. There are bike paths or bake lanes throughout the city. And on many weekends, you’ll find a bike race to take part in or spectate.
But biking fun isn’t just limited to grownups. In a city where kids often learn to bike before they start Kindergarten, you can bet you’ll find lots of great things to do with kids by bike. Below you can learn more about family-friendly trails, fun upcoming events, and our readers’ poll favorites for bike stores and repair.
We asked, you answered! From the classics to new favorites, these trails are perfect for young riders.
Ready to branch out? Hit the road with other families at one of the kid-friendly bike rides going on this summer. You’ll find chances to cross bridges, hear music, eat food, and more—all while on wheels. How fun is that?
If it’s time for a new set of wheels, or just a tune up, check out the winners of our yearly readers’ poll for bike store and repair.
