Forget Roses. Here’s How to Really Celebrate Mom

All families are different and each has their own way of celebrating mothers, female caregivers or important women in their lives.  Here are a few fun ways to build memories with the women you are celebrating!

Sometimes going out for a delicious brunch can feel a bit less appealing when you know your littles may struggle with the wait to be seated on a notoriously busy day. Consider a place like La Provence in Beaverton. While you can’t make a reservation, you can let your kiddos play in the splash pad area (the water isn’t turned on yet), check out the ducks and fish in the pond behind the restaurant or support the independent toy store Piccolo Mondo while you wait. Once seated, La Provence not only has delicious food for the adults, but a great and reasonably priced children’s menu that is presented on a paper with games and comes complete with crayons. All of their locations throughout the Portland area also have a wide variety of baked goods and desserts you can purchase and take with you for a memorable celebration at home.  Pro tip: You can even buy plain, almond, and chocolate croissants to bake at home! Who doesn’t love a fresh, hot croissant in the comfort of your own kitchen?  Just make sure to plan ahead!

Moms and families are busy practically by definition. If you’re looking for a quick and special treat to celebrate mom amongst all of your other activities that day, Portland has you covered! Try absolutely delicious shave ice at Wailua Shave Ice, unique rolled ice cream at 22 Below, a hot drink with adorable latte art — even on hot chocolate!— at Soro Soro Coffee and Dessert, or decadent freshly made s’mores at 1927 S’mores Company (they even have kits you can take home!)

Maybe a sit down brunch just isn’t in the cards for your family. Step into the Wonderwood Springs Mini Golf! From the creative mind of Mike Bennett, this 9-hole indoor mini golf course is decorated with over 750 hand drawn characters and scenes for a mini golf experience unlike any other.  Mini golf is $10 per person, free for kids under three. And if your family is looking for a post-game snack, the Wonderwood Springs cafe is next door. Grab a drink, sandwich, or snack and borrow a game from their extensive game library and you have something fun for all ages.

For those of you looking for an active way to create family memories your kids will love, check out the Mother’s Day special at Oaks Amusement Park. On May 12, moms get a free ride bracelet with the purchase of a child’s bracelet.  Your kids will think you are amazing, and you will benefit from the great deal!

For high-adrenaline fun for older kids, the Timbers are playing their arch rivals to the north, Seattle Sounders also on May 12 (kick off is 1:45 pm). This game tends to be the most exciting — and rambunctious — game of the season! And for families with younger kids, or those who prefer to watch the action from the big screen, hitting up a local restaurant or pub showing the game is another fun option.

Some families are looking for something a little more low key— a way to spend time together in a new and beautiful place. Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden may be for you! It is the gorgeous home to many plants, birds, ducks, and more. This is a garden rather than a park with a playground, but there is much for all to enjoy. April and May are the peak months for rhododendrons to bloom, so you can expect beautiful colors all throughout the garden. If you visit on Saturday, May 11, you can also catch their annual plant show and sale. Admission is $8.95 for adults, $5.95 for ages 6 to 21, and free for ages 5 and under. And for more spring bloom spots, don’t miss these locations.

However you celebrate, here’s to all the moms and mother figures!
