Pedalheads Is Your Kid Biking Expert

From our friends at Pedalheads

Did you bike or walk to your destination today?
Did you eat at a farm-to-table restaurant recently?
Did you take transit this week?

As a Portland resident, you likely did. We love that Portland peeps are environmentally conscious and enjoy exploring the 10,000+ acres of parkland. It’s no wonder Portland is the largest bike-friendly city in the US! We know it’s a must that your child learns to ride a bike, but we also know you have other factors getting in the way of teaching your child to ride —that’s where we come in.

About Pedalheads

Our learn-to-ride bike program is best known for helping kids ages three through 12 get off training wheels and safely ride on the road. Our program includes:

  • a progression of six instructional levels for you to choose from
  • three-hour half-day camps
  • seven-hour all-day camps
  • private lessons
  • before and after care options

Kids get lots of time on their bikes learning and playing games, navigating obstacle courses, and challenging themselves with a variety of activities in a safe and supportive environment.

The Experience

Some people love teaching their kid to ride a bicycle: it can be a fun, exciting, and rewarding bonding experience, especially if the parent is calm and attentive. It’s also helpful if the parent’s teaching style matches the child’s learning style.

However, this experience can also be stressful for both parent and child. Many parents subscribe to the release-and-let-them-try method; these kids frequently maintain lasting memories of broken trust, lack of support, skinned knees, and many meltdowns. When us adults ride our bikes, it’s second nature, but there’s actually an overwhelming amount to think about when teaching a child to ride:

  • Balancing
  • Pedalling
  • Steering
  • Starting and stopping
  • Gliding

We understand these challenges, not to mention the physical pain (E.G. tweaked muscles, back pain, and exhaustion) and the emotional pain (E.G. anxiety and fear of failure) that accompany this experience.

While teaching a kid to ride can be an overwhelming experience or a rewarding one, some people simply don’t have a choice and are unable to teach their child due to disabilities, injuries, or time constraints.

These situations are why we exist. We get it! We hear you! Let us take the burden off.

A Win-Win Situation

As a Portland resident, whatever your situation, we know that it is imperative that your child learns to ride a bike, and many people turn to Pedalheads for help. Kids who take our programs are fully supported by experts who are knowledgeable, professional, experienced, and compassionate, ultimately allowing parents to skip the challenging moments and ride right into quality family time together. Also, the kids get to build lifelong friendships in a caring and encouraging learning environment. It’s a win-win for everyone!
