The Birth First Education Center is dedicated to helping families thrive before, during, and after having a baby by offering information, education, and community. The Birth First Education Center offers in-person classes and groups at our comfortable and conveniently located brick-and-mortar space.  Portland’s best experts have been brought together so they can share their knowledge about pregnancy, birth, postpartum, infants, and parenting and help families prepare for this big life transition.

Current Classes

Hands-On Birth Preparation Class: This 4.5 hour class covers the basics of birth anatomy and hormones, the stages of labor, common hospital and birth center protocols, how to support people during labor, and hands-on coping strategies, positions, and techniques.

One-Day Lamaze-Based Birth Class: This 8 hour class covers how to support birth through the Lamaze Six Healthy Birth Practices and also covers birth anatomy, the stages of labor, labor positions, and comfort techniques with plenty of hands-on practice.

Newborn Care 101: This 3 hour class explains how to care for your newborn baby including what to expect when you bring baby home, diapering, swaddling, soothing, infant bathing, baby-wearing, and much more.

Breastfeeding & Bottle Feeding Basics: Feeding issues are one of the biggest stressors for families during the postpartum. This class will teach you how to recognize your baby’s feeding cues, when and how to introduce a bottle, if your baby is getting enough milk, and much more.

Parent-Infant Play Group: This 8-week series is a “RIE-style” play group, which means the adults will observe infant play with minimal interruption followed by discussion and questions about parenting and child development in a supportive and informative atmosphere.

Birthing From Within Series: This 5-week series is perfect for people who want a deep dive into childbirth preparation, like the idea that birth is a rite of passage, want to strengthen the bond with their partner, and are willing to explore through connection and creativity.

Respectful Parenting Prep Class: This 3 class series provides an introduction to the basic tenets of respectful parenting, natural motor development, encouraging independent infant play, and caregiving routines. Classes are filled with big-picture theory, discussion, and modeling.

Infant CPR For Parents & Family Members: This class will teach you the lifesaving skills of infant CPR, infant choking relief, and how to call for help. It is designed for parents, grandparents, nannies, babysitters, or anyone else who will be caring for your baby.

Coping With Labor & Birth: This 2 hour class explores the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of coping with the intensity of labor and birth and provides opportunities for couples to practice “tried and true” exercises and techniques that provide comfort.

The Birth First Education Center prioritizes safety by requiring masks and limiting class size.
