Love is at the heart (pun intended!) of Valentine’s Day  celebrations. Whether it’s sharing a sweet treat, exploring a new park with the littles or  taking in a show, check out these activities happening in-and-around the Portland area.

Bake up some fun. Bob’s Red Mill is hosting a Kid’s Valentine’s Cupcake Decorating Class on Saturday, 2/12. A professional chef will guide your child through the process of making two batches of cupcakes, 6 standard and 12 mini. It’s the sweetest way to celebrate!

Fall in Love with Lents. Head to Lents Town Center for the Fall in Love with Lents festival on February 11-13 for free activities, performances and art. There will even be a “Really Really Free” community market on Friday! Festivities go from dawn to dusk.

Make Valentines at SCRAP. The Oregon Society of Artists is teaming up with SCRAP for some up-cycled Valentine crafting making for the whole family. Join Valentine Fun with Scrap on February 11, from 6-8 pm.

Take in a show together. There are some fabulous family-friendly shows happening this month. Treat your little sweetheart to an evening (or afternoon) at one of Portland’s performing arts theaters. Also check out Frozen, Jr. at STAGES Performing Arts Youth Academy in Hillsboro, Feb 11-13.

Get illuminated. The 7th annual Portland Winter Light Festival returns in all its luminous glory. This city-wide festival features more than 100 art installations, kinetic fire sculptures and spectacular performances. Many of the anchor installations are situated along the banks of the Willamette — between the foot of the Tilikum Bridge and the Hawthorne Bridge — but since the festival is spread out across the Portland area, there’s likely an installation or two in your neck of the woods. February 4-12, 2022. Starts at dusk.

Hunt for Hearts. Starting Saturday, February 5, hunt for Cupid’s hearts throughout Wilsonville City Parks. If you snap a photo of at least five hearts and send them to the recreation coordinator you’ll be entered to win gift cards! Lots of fun, zero dollars. Once you’ve found those, head to Tualatin and look for beautiful glass hearts placed throughout their parks and trails. You are welcome to keep Tualatin’s hearts or hide them in a new place for another neighbor to find.

Have a cuppa. Celebrate Valentine’s Day in style with a posh afternoon tea service at Lovejoy’s Tea Room in Northeast Portland. Throughout February, the quaint tea room is hosting its RoyalTEA service. And for children ages 12 and under, the Royal Wee Tea Service is available for $35. Reservations required. Pinkies up!

Send love notes. On Saturday, February 12 from 11 am to noon, the JCPenney in Washington Square is hosting Valentine’s Day crafting hour. Kids can create a card, and a gift box, to give to a friend. Participants also will receive a collector’s pin, plus, a special lanyard to hold their Kids Zone pin.

Get spooky. Think haunted houses are only meant during Halloween? Well, the folks at Fear PDX disagree. The popular haunted house event on Northeast Glisan is back for a spooky twist on Saturday, February 12 and is a nontraditional Valentine’s outing for Halloween-loving teens. Love Bites: A Valentine’s Haunted House is just what it sounds like: your classic-haunted-house-but-make-it-Valentine’s-themed.

Muddy buddies. The annual My Muddy Valentine 5K is back at Lee Farms in Tualatin. Gather the whole family for a fun — but muddy — race and obstacle course. Afterward, enjoy free drinks by the bonfire. Bonus: there’s a virtual option, too!

Eat sweets. Check out our Top 5 picks for local Valentine treats.

Drive by a Valentine Display. Holidays on Franklin Street is known for its Halloween and Christmas displays, but they also go all out for Valentine’s Day, too! Drive by for free.

Go on a Blind Book Date. The Vancouver Community Library has wrapped up library books with just a few clues on the cover. Be sure to ask a librarian about the selection to make sure they’re kid-appropriate if you are bringing littles, or take your teen and pick whatever you like!

Grab a Valentine Kit at the library. Ledding Library is offering grab and go Valentine craft bags, while supplies last. West Slope Library is offering felt conversation heart hand warmers in this month’s take-and-make kit.

Snap photos at Leka Playland. Leka Playland is always beautiful, but on February 14 they will be decked out for the holiday, with a cute photo booth, heart-shaped sensory bin and lots of treats. All this is included with regular admission.

Happy Valentine’s Day from all of us here at PDX Parent!
