PDX Parent AI Policy

PDX Parent produces local stories that you can trust. Our print and online editorial content is never AI-generated. In fact, we only hire freelance writers local to Oregon and Washington. And our editorial staff members, who have extensive journalism experience, live and raise their families in Portland. Our credibility rests on accuracy, transparency and our care for our local community of parents.

Freelance writers agree to PDX Parent’s AI policy. PDX Parent reserves the right to reject any AI generated stories.

AI Policy

This policy provides guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools among our editorial team. It applies to all staff, contributors, and contractors involved in the creation and editing of content for our print products, website, social media and newsletters.

General principles

As a tool, generative AI should not supplant human oversight. The accuracy of any content created — whether text or visuals — should be confirmed by editorial staff before publication as generative AI is prone to mistakes. Generative AI can generate false information because it doesn’t have true understanding or access to verifiable facts. If you have questions about the use of generative AI, ask editorial leadership.

Acceptable Uses of AI

  • Generate story ideas.
  • Generate ideas for interview questions.
  • Generate SEO headlines, URLs and meta descriptions.
  • Generate social media posts.
  • Generate summaries and briefs.
  • Gather background on a story.
  • Gather expert source suggestions on specific topics.
  • Identify and research sources and reference materials.
  • Grammar or sentence construction questions.
  • Basic editing guidance.
  • Sourcing data (from uploaded PowerPoints, PDFS)

Prohibited Uses of AI

  • Using AI to generate content without any supporting material or using your content.
  • Publishing AI-generated or AI-assisted content without clear labeling.
  • Relying solely on AI for generating facts, quotes, or critical content without human verification.
  • Using AI to fabricate or alter information, images, or audio that could be misleading
  • Allowing AI systems to make final decisions on story selection or content publication without human oversight.

Labeling and Transparency Guidelines

  • Every piece of content significantly assisted by AI should include a clear statement such as: “This article includes content generated with the assistance of AI tools.”
  • If AI was used in the creation or editing of images, videos, or graphics, include a note in the caption or credits.

Human verification

  • All AI-generated or AI-assisted content must be reviewed by a human editor or writer before publication.
  • Editors and writers must verify facts, quotes, and data produced with the help of AI.
  • Ensure that the final published content maintains PDX Parent’s editorial standards
