Calling all Leslie Knopes! We all know and love Portland Parks & Rec (PP&R) for its affordable, fun after-school and summer programming (they’re a 2022 PDX Parent Picks Winner!), but did you also know it’s just as simple to volunteer with the city department? The department offers loads of opportunities in two broad categories: recreation and land stewardship.

For adults that want to work with youth, recreation volunteerism includes things like coaching children in basketball and volleyball, setting up equipment for special events like the monthly Family 5K Fun Runs — which return this spring! — and summer community events.
And if you’re a nature lover, PP&R offers ways to help restore Portland’s natural areas, including weed pulling, picking up trash and spreading mulch on trails and in parks. Many land stewardship volunteering opportunities are also suitable for the whole family, says Mark Ross, PP&R spokesperson. “Except for head coaches, no experience is necessary — we will train you,” he says. “Volunteering is a great way to learn new skills.”
To participate, email PP&R Volunteer Manager Steve Pixley at steve.pixley@portlandoregon.gov or call 503-823-5121.
